Manchester Regional Athletics Arena is funded by Sport England and Manchester City Council. It was opened by the Mayor of Manchester in April 2002, prior to the Commonwealth Games.
The building is currently being managed by Manchester Leisure and serves a variety of stakeholders. These include England Squash, the English Institute of Sport, Serco and UK Athletics.
The eight-lane, 400m track cost approximately £3.5m to build and can host all field events. With a seating capacity of 6000, the 360° stands overlook the entire athletics track.
The track was officially opened on the 20th January 2004 by Manchester-born sprinter Darren Campbell, who went on to win a gold medal for the 4x100m relay at the Athens Olympic Games.
In 2008, the indoor track at the Manchester Regional Arena will, for the first time, play host to the Wheelchair Basketball competition. The track centre will be transformed in order to stage the four-day, top-level competition and accommodate in excess of 500 spectators.
